Pros: 'Stack-of-primes' like.
Cons: Hefty.

Treatment is a b***h considering of it's weight. This gets a 9 for handling due to the weight. Reminds me of a bullpup rifle specially when using the tripod mount as a carrying handle.

At that place are only ii primary lenses in my full frame inventory and information technology is this and the D FA* 50mm f1.4. The images generated feel like the aforementioned smoothness and 'pop' of 50mm f1.four except down the entirety of 70-200mm.

As a result - when doing some closer range wildlife/birding at the 200mm ish focal length yous can be confident of getting superb epitome quality/doubling up as a 300mm on an APS-C albeit restricted to the 15MP output of the K1ii in cropped sensor manner. (My hunch is it volition do very well on a K3iii which I have yet to sample.)

For all the other technical/MTF figures based comparison - wait elsewhere. I severely discounted the CameraVille'southward review opinions due to the steal price of 630USD (being an ex display unit) in this instance and say it for the tape - STAR designation is non something handing out lightly is my subjective conclusion. This is the yardstick of a digital pro lens.

Pros: Border-Edge sharpness wide open, fast and accurate AF, treatment, zoom ring, bokeh, cost (if second-hand)
Cons: Perhaps weight but balances extremely well with K-1, slightest royal fringing wide open confronting strong lite
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: ix Bokeh: ten Autofocus: 10 Handling: 9 Value: 9 New or Used: Used Camera Used: Pentax K-ane

WOW! I just got this lens in used condition from a great seller and I tin can only say ane thing: Information technology really actually is the all-time pentax lens for the modern historic period.

I only cannot believe how rugged, ridiculously and flatteringly sharp information technology is wide open edge-edge, how fast information technology grabs focus (brand sure y'all do the fine af adjustment at 70mm and 200mm to find the sweetspot).

I accept never been able to accept the K-1, set it to autozones with 33 AF points and hope for the best but somehow this lens and the K-1 are such an intelligent pair that everything that focused on by the camera is and then correct. I hateful I merely tin can't believe how I can capture birds in flight an hour after sunset at ISO 6400. Just ridiculous.

For portraits of whatever beast, human being or non, the bokeh is simply delicious. Anyways just accept a wait at the photos. They're past no means great photos merely I love the rendering and that lovely 3D pop the magnificent microcontrasting gives.

Pretty much the only matter to signal out as a slight negative, but this is really reaching, is that it's a weighty son of a... if you need to have information technology out for many hours, say for a wedding shoot. But to be quite honest I'm used to hand-belongings the DFA 150-450mm and and so my arms are well prepared for something that weighs 300g less - trust me that 300g makes a huge difference. This lens feels and then light compared to the 150-450 (which is some other legendary lens past the way).

Once again I cannot stress how fantastic this lens is at f2.8 in terms of pop and sharpness and colours. Not sure why Li at Cameraville had such bad luck with his copies. He says he tried 3 copies and he saw blurry images. I have no idea what on earth happened at that place. But look at the sharpness on mine...

Finally, Please conduct in mind that PentaxForums does not display the true sharpness of these photos. The one of the pigeon and the crow, for case, you lot can see the actual fine lines then clearly on my computer and laptop. Aye, just worth bearing in mind anyhow. But any of you that have experienced seeing your photos after uploading them on here know the tradeoff anyway.

Savour! And please get this lens!!

Focusing is totally silent and seems very accurate. Straight lines remain straight, an indication distortion is almost nonexistent. P.South. The AF stopped working this morning : one of the picayune metal tabs on the lower part of the inner mount that transmits the electric signal between the lens and the body had fallen out of position. I put it back "delicately" in its place and AF returned to normal. This flimsy electrical contact volition certainly become lacking again. I will consult my trusted local repairman to accept the effect resolved earlier it breaks for good.

I left my DFA* lens at Service Photographic camera Pro today. The chief technician thinks it should be easy to fix this electrical trouble. They simply glued the loose copper tab into place and kept it pressed overnight then as to go a perfect fit. They "polished" the exterior of the lens and gave me back a "like-new" lens, removing all traces of use by the previous owner.

Oh my giddy aunt but this is a whopper. Big, heavy and super-sharp.

At 100 information technology beats my 100 f2.eight D FA Macro hands. on sharpness, speed of focus, everything.

No distortion or CA at whatever length or whatsoever discontinuity. Just stellar resolution. The much overused 'bag of primes' is apt for this lens.

Merely do endeavour handling one before buying - 'heavy' doesn't do it justice. If you can paw-hold it, you'll exist rewarded with a really not bad lens. If y'all can't it'll stay in your cupboard.

Judging by my example information technology'due south built like a brick outhouse, then I daresay would be a practiced second hand buy.

Cons: Weight, mayhap autofocus

What a briliant lens. The colors are amazing. The sharpness is very good for a zoom lens. It's a large lens, but the build quality is splendid. Controls such equally focus limiters and quickshift are neat. I thing is the technical stuff, but the images the lens produces is just brilliant, which makes this a professional lens capable of matching all camera manufcaturers and lenses in my opinon. It's big and my wife struggles to employ it simply this is the backside of all 70-200 f / 2.viii lenses. Information technology's likewise weatherproof and a star lens. Together with the new 50 mm sdm aw, these are my two all-time lenses for guaranteed stunning images (if the photography skills are the constant factor here )

I've had this lens about vi months, and I can say is WOW!! this is my baby, my go too lens. It is solid and very well made, focuses very quickly and quietly, takes gorgeous pictures, the zoom and focus rings operate smoothly, and it feels great on my K-1 Mark II. I accept tried to think of something I don't similar near this lens, but I can't. If you lot don't have this one...GET IT!!!!

Lens Review Date: February four, 2019 I can recommend this lens: Yep | Price: $ane,400.00 | Rating:10

Pros: Amazing IQ, good AF, well built
Cons: Large and heavy
Sharpness: ten Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: ten Autofocus: x Treatment: 8 Value: 9 New or Used: New Photographic camera Used: Yard-1

I have had the FA80-200/ii.8 for nearly 10 years and this is a worthwhile upgrade. IQ is better in every fashion, but specially because the sharpness combined with the punchy colour make for vibrant images even excluding post processing.

However, it has too gained quite a chip of weight in the process; information technology is a very chunky lens. The tripod collar is vastly improved over the FA80-200/two.8; in item the human foot is wider and the neckband rotates with click stops at useful intervals (I believe every ninety degrees). The manual focus feels very smoothen and well damped; better than the DA* and FA* lenses.

The DC autofocus is too much more confident than the screwdrive. Sometimes screwdrive AF tin can become stuck making a series of fine adjustments (and a bunch of click noises to continue with information technology) which I exercise not find on the DFA70-200 which is confident and quiet.

The published dimensions don't really get in easy to assess how large/heavy this lens is. It is naturally much larger and heavier than the relatively compact DA*60-250, but I was also surprised comparing it to the FA80-200/two.viii.

Pros: sharp, f2.8, build quality
Cons: heavy
Sharpness: x Aberrations: 8 Bokeh: eight Autofocus: eight Treatment: 7 Value: 8 New or Used: New Camera Used: K1

Built like a tank ...... darn information technology's massive !! and heavy.

Simply WOW does it perform like the pro lens information technology is.

The autofocus on the K1 is acceptable but doesn't make me quiver with excitement, however information technology does for FF what the 50-135 cannot exercise for aps-c .... focus fast plenty.

At least on par with 50-135 for IQ, which is proverb something.

Where this may also come in handy, apart from weddings and sport, is on my k3 for doing a little close activeness wildlife.

F2.8 on the k3 will help with shutter speeds and iso, while giving 300mm .... win win situation.

Beautifully fabricated lens at a price, but then again its a keeper.........

Pros: very very sharp, extremely well built
Cons: heavy, but you get used to it
Sharpness: x Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: ten Autofocus: x Handling: 7 Value: 10 New or Used: New Camera Used: K1

I'1000 so happy with this lens. Bought it recently, together with my commencement full frame camera, the Pentax K1. Never been so happy about an aquisition and I previously owned many cameras, throughout the years.

The lens is extremely well built, information technology feels solid in the mitt, pro equipment still. I've been using it for portraits and some nature photography. The sharpness in this lens is absolutely amazing beyond the frame! Y'all tin't ask for anything better than this. It's expensive, yep but the satisfaction y'all get from information technology it'southward quite unique.

The only negative thing about it, it'due south that it'south quite heavy. I found it hard to handle information technology, at the beginning but I got used to it.

I would recommend it to every Pentax K1 owner and not simply. This lens is a must have!

Pros: sharpness, IQ
Cons:

Very happy with this lens. Great build. Great epitome quality. Autofocus is relatively fast compared to my other Pentax lenses (such as DA☆300) and tends to get authentic focus more than ofttimes than them. I think the DA☆ still gives meliorate resolving for my pixel peeping urges or astringent cropping. I haven't calibrated the lxx-200 yet, just think I need to. Hoping that will increase my keeper rate a piddling. I like the tripod mount much more the 300's mount. The ii.8 has proven quite valuable for indoor briefing and dark concert photos. So much so that I haven't been using the 300 since I got this.
When I bought it, I had the option for the Tamron or Sigma. Certainly could have saved myself a bundle of money for ownership more than lenses. However, I could encounter from the reviews and comparisons that this was superior. In the terminate, I would accept been frustrated with the other ii and would have wanted this one. So, no regrets.
Regarding my scoring, please note that I'm a teacher. So, a 10 means perfect for me. Nothing is perfect. Perhaps 9 is too low on most of the points. 9 for bokeh is correct though. It's quite pleasant, merely I've seen ameliorate. I gave an 8 to autofocus just considering the lens often focuses on something in the background. Peradventure that's photographer or photographic camera error, merely until I notice why it's happening, I'll go out the score at 8.

Pros: IQ, Controls, Great with HD1.4TC, Smooth QF
Cons: Weight, Weight, Weight...
New or Used: New

A truthful *Star series lens. Built like a tank, IQ off the charts good, infrequent in every way, unfortunately much heavier than FA* 80-200. Extensively tested with LensCal and Yves' calibrators. At both ends of zoom range and using LensCal stand offs and Yves' lengths, as well as a close-up. All were expressionless zero +- .one. My DA*s (50-135 and 60-250) were non this good. Both were AF Calibrated at +ii and -three respectively...

Colors, Sats, in the field besides quite squeamish. would have preferred ring location bandy (focus and zoom). Silky smooth through, a Rolls Royce of lenses...

Typical *Star Pentax IQ, needs wheels though

PS: LensCoat is now making the covers for this lens (iv/28/17). I sent mine to them for a blueprint then covers will be bachelor. I received the cover today 100% LensCoat Quality...They used my FA*300/F2.8 and DFA150-450 for patterns likewise. Bang-up products...

Lens Review Appointment: February nine, 2017 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $1,796.95 | Rating:9

Pros: Very abrupt overall. Very low baloney and chromatic aberration. Smooth bokeh. Excellent build quality. Fast autofocus.
Cons: Some softness wide open at shut focusing distances. Very heavy.
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: ten Bokeh: 10 Autofocus: 9 Handling: 9 Value: viii New or Used: New Camera Used: Pentax K-3 Two

Overall, this lens is optically excellent, only there is a scrap of room for improvement.

Sharpness throughout the zoom range is excellent overall. Wide-open sharpness is very good, and stopping down to f/4 produces outstanding results corner to corner. In that location's very fiddling in the way of chromatic aberration, vignetting, or distortion, and flare is very well controlled. Wide open up at close distances at 200mm, spherical aberration does noticeably hurt sharpness, only stopping down a fleck sharpens upwardly the image.

Autofocus is fast, taking 0.55s to go from cease to stop on the focusing scale. Using the focus limiter tin improve this further. Focusing action is very quiet and responsive. This lens excels in tracking fast-moving subjects, fifty-fifty in a dim basketball game court, and I never felt held back past the speed of the AF motor. However, in that location is a bit of inconsistency when critical focus is required; you might desire to use Live View and manually focus in such situations.

The D FA* seventy-200mm is constructed almost entirely of metal; it's congenital like a tank and should withstand crude use. However, it is very heavy, more so than C&N 70-200mm lenses. Information technology's also very large; when mounted on my K-iii II with grip, it barely fits in my main camera pocketbook (Think Tank Photograph Urban Disguise 60 v2.0). A good tripod or monopod is strongly recommended for extended utilize. You'll besides want to look at culling ways of carrying it on the field, such every bit a sling strap or holster. My SpiderPro holster has no trouble handling 8 lbs from the combined lens, photographic camera, and Metz 58 AF-2 flashgun; no thing how you lot carry it, though, the weight is going to exist very obvious.

Size and weight aside, the controls on the lens are well thought out. The zoom ring rotates ninety while the focus ring rotates 175. Both rings are very well damped allowing for very precise adjustment, though a scrap of backlash (play) is present in the focus band. The focus style and limiter switches have solid clicks. The redesigned tripod collar attaches much more hands than the onetime design used in the DA* 60-250mm and DA* 300mm lenses and is more than secure likewise.

Pricing is currently slightly beneath that of its C&Due north counterparts. Given that operation is considerably ameliorate than third-political party alternatives (but not quite as good equally C&Northward's latest 70-200s), information technology's a fair value.

Ultimately, I tin can recommend this lens to any Pentaxian looking for a full frame-ready professional telephoto zoom.
